Dance Styles

Below is a set of short descriptions for the dance styles we teach. Look and see what forms of exciting salsa and bachata styles we instruct. Find what fits you and come join us!

Salsa

Bachata

Salsa On1

Sometimes referred to as a more “ballroom” salsa, or “easier” salsa, this style is just as hard as every salsa and is the main form in VA. It can also be referred to as “L.A.” Style.

Salsa On2

Becoming more popular, and the original “mambo” salsa. Salsa On2 largely takes place from Maryland to NY and is different solely in count. Though it can often have “mambo arms” which Salsa On1 linear style does not always have as complex arms. This form is more from Eddie Torres, Cuban and Danzon mixed together, and a signifiant history in NY. It can also be referred to by “NY Style.”

Rueda De Casino and Casino Style

In the DMV area and select groups like Cuba, this style is in the shape of a wheel (Rueda) based off of Casino. The motions are more circular than in other styles and Rueda de Casino is specifically a “call and response” dance. It is often said to be like playing “Simon says” and is fun for younger crowds.

Dominican

The “true” bachata formed in the Dominican Republic. This style is filled with intricate footwork and can even be performed without partners due to its form.

Modern

With a lack of access to Dominican bachata, the western world started to use very common moves like basics forward and back, hammerlocks, sweetheart and cuddle position to dance bachata socially.

Sensual

Based off of modern bachata and adding in elements from Spain, this style has a lot of body movement and close connection. Brazilian Zouk has these elements and the two dances are often related.
